The industry as a whole averages over $500 billion according to Forbes, and $5.7 billion of those dollars are spent by black women. Market research suggests that black women twice as much on cosmetics than other demographics. The cosmetics marketed towards black women often contain toxic ingredients, meaning black women use toxic products at a high rate.

Luckily there are many black women actively working to combat this. Black women have begun creating their cosmetic brands, not only are they creating products for black women. They’re doing it with healthy ingredients and sustainable practices.


Most cosmetic products contain a chemical linked to, breast cancer, hormone disruption, birth defects, and other chronic illnesses. The personal care industry is self-regulated, allowing harmful chemicals to enter our bodies. These chemicals can be toxic in small doses, which can also pass on to your baby.
