Let’s go back to 2001, Simon West, a middle-aged white man, directed the film “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.”

Then, in 2018 another version of “Tomb Raider” had been released, directed by Roar Uthaug, another middle-aged white man.

Fast forward to 2021, after it has just been announced that Misha Green has been chosen to not only direct but write the sequel to “Tomb Raider.”

On Jan. 25, Deadline reported the “Lovecraft Country” showrunner has taken on this new project.

As the world knows, the massive success that “Lovecraft Country” had with a grade of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.1/10 on IMDb Misha Green is definitely the right person to have tell a story.

Not only does this announcement bring joy because the public knows this film is in great hands, but it is important because it gives the next generation one thing: a new reality. Young Black women who aspire to be in Misha Green's position, have confirmation that their efforts are not in vain.

Unfortunately, according to Vanity Fair “Only 4.3 percent of all directors across the 1,200 top grossing films were female, a ratio of 22 males to every one female.”

Misha Green, among other Black women in the film industry like Ava Duvernay, Nia DaCosta, and more show young Black women that these opportunities are tangible, despite the numbers.
